PETALING JAYA: Doctors are reminded to take their Hippocratic oath seriously and not cause any harm to people in view of Kelantan pushing its hudud law implementation in the state.
Health director-general Datuk Seri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the oath required doctors to heal and not do otherwise.
“Our oath is, first, do no harm,” he said.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam also said the ministry would not allow its doctors to perform amputation on criminals.
Dr Noor Hisham and Dr Subramaniam said that in response to a news portal report quoting Kelantan’s hudud implementation committee member Dr Azhar Abdullah saying that the state might hire Muslim doctors to perform amputations under its Syariah Criminal Code (II) Enactment.
Dr Azhar had claimed that a surgeon and an anaesthetist had indicated their willingness to carry out the task.
Dr Noor Hisham said doctors should not be doing the amputation job. “It should instead be carried out by an executioner,” he said, drawing similarity to caning, which was done by executioners.
Universiti Malaya medical faculty dean Prof Dr Adeeba Kamarulzaman also urged doctors to consider carefully before getting involved in the hudud implementation.
She said the country had not fulfilled the preconditions required by Islam for hudud implementation such as equality, justice and compassion.
“There are too many injustices and it would be unfair to the poor and the weak,” said Dr Adeeba, who has treated and counselled many drug abusers and HIV patients.
